About the organization
FatBoy Sammies was a sandwich pop-up from Cleveland chefs Vinnie Cimino and Ryan Boone, who both worked at Greenhouse Tavern and Summer House and spent the early pandemic running CLE Family Meal, which fed out-of-work service industry workers. Launched in February 2021 at Mahall's in Lakewood, it applied fine-dining technique to approachable American sandwiches with a nostalgic '90s theme drawn from hip-hop, school lunches and Nickelodeon, under the slogan "Have It Our Way."
The menu included the Boomer Cheezsteak with crispy mushrooms and pepper jelly, a chickpea take on the sloppy joe called the Untidy Joseph, and a chicken sammie with Kool-Aid-brined pickles. Orders came in custom bags with trading cards, the pop-up's version of a Happy Meal toy. It popped up around Cleveland at spots like Larder and Winchester Music Tavern.
