Hey there gang, it’s me Thomas with a special year-end report.
In 2019, according to u.s. climate data collected by the national weather service it rained an average amount. 39 inches so far in Cleveland. The human race has completed around 7 billion man-years of labor in just 12 months' time, which culminated with creations like an electric power train cyber truck, a baby Yoda, and a live-action cats movie. You’re entitled to your opinions of course, but the fact of the matter is it rained, basically the same as it always does.
In a way things are normal. I used to really dislike that word, normal, but lately, I’ve gotten romantic about it.
I’ll explain.
This year at CreativeMornings we met the leader of the film commission and a pop music producer. We went to the aquarium with a biomimicry industrial designer and to a historic library with a woman building a Hispanic business district for equitable development. We had breakfast with an all-girls private school headmistress, a CEO coach, and a digital marketing guru. We went to the beach with an international coffee buyer and to a jazz club with a lettering & mural artist before getting cozy with a hip hop artist in a secret basement venue downtown and with a dining critic in a midtown paper making conservatory.
These adventures are spectacular but it’s great to celebrate them for being normal, to conceive that it's normal for any of us to do these spectacular things ourselves. Nearly 1500 guests have joined in the 2019 conversations. Among those, there were 400 new faces I’ve never seen before and I’m happy are familiar now. Typically I leave you guys some jokes here, but I’m not feeling up to it today… I’m just feeling nostalgic. There’s one more event this year, on what is likely everyone’s last day of work before the winter holiday break. The last day before we start looking back on a decade. This event concludes 5 years of CreativeMornings, and I’m ready to close that handful with a high five hello to a new decade. The 20s could be anything. I hope they are spectacularly normal.
