I’d love to make an announcement about how truly special GREYT BIG TALK will be THIS COMING Friday morning, the 17th of September, 2021. You can skip to the bottom for some details while I get to a couple of quick stories swimming in my head right now > > especially if you need an extra moment to vote in the Cleveland Mayoral Primary today.
Ok, I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve heard there’s a guy who lives in Cleveland, his name’s Dan, and his daughter died in a horrific skiing accident a while back. Dan was already a millionaire businessman when this accident happened in the mid-90s - and how he processed the trauma was to invest in inventing a safer biking/climbing/skiing helmet that would stop this type of thing from happening to others. He also started a grant fund for young female artists in her honor and donated a parcel of land at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River to the city for a park named in her memory.
That’s where we’re going on Friday morning, Wendy Moore’s Park. I can’t say that it’s unequivocally my favorite park because I have so many favorites.. but this place is inspiring to me - for its beauty, its origin, its juxtaposing detachment and proximity under the foot of the city, the butting with a global transportation route, the abandoned military station, the nature preservation. It’s rich in complexity, rare to see a simple patch of dirt that's so much all at once.
I’m a little late to the game sharing this month’s program and attendance will likely be a little more intimate (unless some of you band-wagoneers bang some drums :-) I had some trouble nailing down details, and when I might have been able to share things earlier I was called to be with my family for much of the last week to mourn the passing of my grandfather.
An immense thank you goes to Pauly and Marie for outreach and arranging our speaker this month - Baiju is a higher profile community leader in Cleveland - currently the president of the Greater Cleveland Partnership. A large part of why we organize these talks is so that we can meet people in our community floating around the internet as avatar profile pictures, or featured in press headlines, and get a chance to interact in person. Familiarity helps us to defeat trivial tribal us vs. them conflicts… even in cases when we might disagree, we can recognize our shared humanity for the limited time our bodies traverse this earth.
In seeking I hope you might find what you’re looking for.
