Sky People

The good people of New York started and finished building the Empire State Building between March 1930 and April 1931. It opened in May 1931.

It OPENED In May! Does that sound ridiculous? A year! They built the entire Empire State Building in a year. The bridge by my parents' house has been under construction for about that long. I think it’ll be ready for repairs again by the time it’s finished.

I know, I know. People can definitely get a lot done in a short amount of time. When there’s determination and resource alignment, almost anything can happen. What’s more crazy to me about the Empire State Building story is its intention to be a docking station for airships. Around the same time period, the Terminal Tower here in Cleveland was designed with that possible adaptation in mind, as were dozens of other buildings around the world.

Just picture the future in the 21st century… building upwards and hopping from sky lounge to sky lounge from our floating cities, a whole civilization of sky people.

As nice as a science fiction story that is, I’m happy things didn’t quite work out that way. We’re struggling to stay connected to the Earth as is… which is why I decided to organize this particular Greyt Big Talk with Judy Semroc. Her job is to visit natural spaces and identify unique species of wildlife, insects, and plants for nature conservation efforts.

I think that as a global society, the 19th century was about the discovery of the processes of science, engineering, and industrialization. The 20th century was all about learning the repercussions of industrialization… and I hope, the 21st is about finding a balance, working in concert with nature instead of building at breakneck speed, no holds barred to Mars. The only way I know for that to happen is to talk about that balance and learn it from, with each other. Thanks for tuning in, and I hope you’ll join us tomorrow to hear from Judy about her life’s work in natural studies.

Oh, one more thing. We can still be sky people, too. A special announcement in today’s missive:
