Friends,

I am not a great person to talk to about investing. There are ways to look at the word “invest” in a metaphorical, metaphysical, metabolic, or probably a dozen other meta-word ways, but that would all be crap. When I looked at the word invest as this month’s theme I started thinking the same thing you’re thinking about. Money. Maybe unlike you.. "and how I wish I had some… THEN I could invest, and have more money!" (You see why this isn’t my topic)

In my second semester of community college, I took a personal and family finance course. My professor slicked his hair back and wore a suit that was a little too big for him, he drove a red Mitsubishi Eclipse… or at least I imagined he did. I’ve always been unimpressed by money, but it is near impossible to restrain curiosity about such an important thing so I paid attention. Professor Eclipse was mostly bored himself teaching 18 and 19-year-olds about balancing a checkbook, but one day he came in and clambered chalk against the board one letter at a time with enthusiasm. S T O C K S. “Invest in what you know,” he said. As an example, he shared that there was a new type of pantyhose his wife liked. She was buying tons and so were her friends. He knew it was a good product based on these personal reviews and felt it was a good bet to invest in the company.

I had a little bit of money at the time, working as a file/mailroom clerk for a Fortune 500 company in Mayfield Hts. I decided I’d try this stock market thing out and bought stocks of some of the clients I saw on the files I was putting on shelves. I thought, maybe having some skin in the game would make my job a tiny bit more interesting? I bought two, Goodyear and Chevron. It was a decent idea, but since I bought Chevron, Etrade showed me some other energy industry stocks in my dashboard that I knew nothing about and they moved up and down quite a lot. I got restless and bought something (who knows what it was) while it was down believing the trend I saw that they’d go right back up …

Always invest in what you know.

Luckily there’s this thing where you can learn about new stuff all the time, and there’s free coffee and breakfast and awesome people who can teach you even more awesome new things… I know it goes without saying, but I love organizing and hosting this program so much. I can’t thank you all enough for joining in my curiosity for the people and places we’ve connected here over the years. The time spent has been an investment paid back tenfold.

GREYT CULTURE has big news on the forefront, I announced the umbrella banner for CreativeMornings / Agumboot Music Festival almost a year ago in order to create space to build some sustainable financial models and create even more value for Cleveland’s Creative Communities. The first new program will be announced publicly next week and held next month on March 12th! Continuing our partnership with Phoenix Coffee Co. We’ll be opening their Ohio City Cafe as a ONE-NIGHT ONLY bar after-hours with yours truly behind the counter. We’ll be celebrating the installation of new artworks in the space, which will be available to purchase with money. It’ll be free to attend. The details you need to know are below.

Also below, check for question marks… review what’s listed, reply here with what’s wrong and what you see missing, and anything you’d like to do.

See you soon,

T. Fox
