Alex Sheen

Founder, because I said I would

Alex Sheen is the founder of because I said I would, a social movement and nonprofit dedicated to bettering humanity through promises made and kept. Sparked by the loss of his father in September 2012, he began sending "promise cards" at no cost to anyone, anywhere in the world who asked for them; the organization has since sent more than 16.5 million cards to 178 countries. He takes his own commitments seriously, once walking more than 240 miles across Ohio in 10 days to keep a promise.

Today because I said I would helps people build resilience and healthy mental habits through school and corrections chapters, character education, free lesson plans and promise planners, and grief and leadership retreats at Camp because I said I would, a 92-acre retreat center in Walhonding, Ohio. A five-time TEDx speaker, Sheen has given more than 1,100 keynotes around the world and hosts a podcast and monthly Resilient Leaders Retreats; his speaking fees cover the organization's overhead. His work has been featured on the TODAY Show, Good Morning America, the Steve Harvey Show, CNN, Fox News and NPR.

Downie shoots lifestyle, outdoor and travel work centered on people, for clients such as Columbia Sportswear, XtraTuf, DeWalt, Rocky Boots, Intel and Marriott, and sums up the studio's approach as "people before photos."
