Dan Moulthrop

CEO, The City Club of Cleveland

Dan Moulthrop is CEO of The City Club of Cleveland, one of the nation's oldest free speech forums. Founded in 1912, the City Club convenes more than 120 public programs a year in pursuit of its mission to create conversations of consequence that help democracy thrive. He took the helm in 2013 after years as a member, volunteer and frequent forum moderator. In 2023 he led the club's move into a new home at Playhouse Square.

Before the City Club, he co-founded The Civic Commons, a Knight Foundation project designed to encourage civil, civic dialogue online. Earlier he was a print, radio and television journalist, known across Northeast Ohio as the founding host of the award-winning public affairs program The Sound of Ideas on 90.3 WCPN ideastream.

Dan is co-author, with Dave Eggers and Nínive Calegari, of Teachers Have It Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America's Teachers (The New Press, 2005), which became the basis for the documentary American Teacher. He taught high school English in California's East Bay before turning to journalism and is a graduate of UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism.

SPACES

Location

SPACES

2900 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, OH, 44113

SPACES is a contemporary art space founded in 1978 by artists, for artists, when experimental and non-commercial work had few places to be shown. Its story begins on May 25, 1978, when founder James Rosenberger called together 35 artists interested in creating and presenting new art. SPACES bought its first permanent home on the Superior Viaduct in 1990 and today works from the Van Rooy Building in Hingetown, at West 29th Street and Detroit Avenue, a longtime gathering place for Cleveland's BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Alongside exhibitions and events it runs an international artist-in-residence program, and in 2023 it was commissioner and co-curator of the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
