Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority

Public transit system for Greater Cleveland

About the organization

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, known as RTA or GCRTA, runs public transit across Cuyahoga County and is the largest transit system in Ohio. It was created at the end of 1974, funded by a countywide sales tax that voters approved in 1975, and took over the Cleveland Transit System and the Shaker Rapid that September.

RTA runs buses, the HealthLine bus rapid transit on Euclid Avenue, and four rail lines: the Red Line, the Blue and Green lines that grew out of the 1913 Shaker Heights rapid, and the Waterfront Line. The Red Line's 1968 extension to Hopkins Airport made Cleveland the first city in the Western Hemisphere with direct rapid transit to its major airport. RTA is headquartered at 1240 West 6th Street in downtown Cleveland.
