Anila Rubiku

Albanian-Italian visual artist

Anila Rubiku is an Albanian-born Italian artist who divides her time between Milan, Toronto and Durrës. She studied at the Academy of Arts in Tirana and did postgraduate work at the Brera Academy in Milan. Working in installation, sculpture, embroidery, etching, painting, video and printmaking, she picks the medium to fit the idea, and her poetic, often ironic work takes on political, social and gender issues.

Her projects have tackled the desecration of the built and natural environment (Kyiv Biennale, 2012), migration (Venice Biennale, 2011; Hammer Museum residency, 2013), dictators and their egos (Tel Aviv Museum, 2014), cities and democracy (Venice Architecture Biennale, 2008) and women imprisoned in Albania (Thessaloniki Biennale, 2015). Foreign Policy named her one of its Top Global Thinkers of 2014, and the Human Rights Foundation nominated her for her social commitment. Her work is in collections including the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Mint Museum and the Israel Museum. Recent solo shows include Endje: Wander-Weaving at Assab One in Milan and The Inner Door at Galerie Dix9 in Paris.
