Love For Quitters

My favorite interview question I’ve ever been asked is “You’ve lived a lot of life... what have you learned?”

Holy crap. I don’t remember exactly, but I think I just belly laughed and mirrored the question back to buy some time - what do you say to that? The next time I interview someone I might just ask 'what happens when you die?' for fun, good luck Becky! Points are for creativity.

What have I learned? This isn’t what I said, but a really good answer is something like this. Generally, everybody wants to know if we’re living right, how to make choices that make our life better or worse - when to go or stay, say yes or no, persist or to quit. How do we know when to do any of that? There’s a Tim Ferriss podcast bookmarked in my favorites (worth spending an hour with if you’re on the edge of a big choice) where he asks a bunch of successful people when you should quit something, not assuming that any one person has the right answer, just to collect some ways that others have thought about this question for themselves. In this case, they most widely answer that we should quit “often” - The idea that never quitting is somehow virtuous is just nonsense. We try new things, we make mistakes. We hone our vision, learn more and more about what we want, what we don’t want, and hopefully, hopefully stop doing things that keep us from fulfilling the best version of life we can imagine for ourselves.

I think I’ve built a decent compass - for this part of it, I imagine helping others share their own stories, and lessons, and answers to big questions, because I’ve learned that we’re better for knowing one another, and to do that we also need to know ourselves.

This month on Greyt Big Talk we welcome a writer, and former global publishing executive now living in Lakewood with her family, Brandi Larsen. Brandi helps people write books, and positions them to get publishing and distribution - a big task that many authors and writers in our community likely have questions about.

There are spaces available in Greyt Big Talk for YOU! Please forward the opportunities for sponsor space, culinary and artisan feature space, pitch space, music performance, to people we should feature. Of course, raise your hand if there’s something below you’d like to do. Free tickets are available on Monday morning, so please share with a writer or a fellow creative person who should join us - it costs zero dollars, adjusted for inflation, still zero dollars.

After next Friday, only one Greyt Big Talk remains until summer break. I love summer break, moments of the unexpected.

See you there boys and girls.
